Getting a better grip on datacentres

Datacentre editorial

As power and energy efficiency concerns increasingly become top of mind for IT providers and customers, so too does the need for managing datacentres more effectively.

ARN’s Market Guide to Datacentres is dedicated to looking at ways of refurbishing and re-energising datacentres in light of these factors. We’ve asked the experts and come up with eight key things the channel can do to assist organisations regain control over and better manage their datacentre for the future. These tips range from simple structural designs for the datacentre, such as overhead cabling and hot and cold aisles, to making sure you take in broader business considerations and a customer’s future growth potential.

There’s no doubt greening IT has become an important consideration in any IT deployment over the past year, and in the datacentre it’s even more relevant. An acute power shortage across the country is also wreaking havoc and forcing many to think again before adding more hardware into the datacentre.

With that in mind, IT providers are being asked to demonstrate expertise around power management and adhere to sustainability policies and practices. No new technology deployment today can be done without taking these considerations into account, so it’s important the channel skill up and become vigilant around these broader management concerns.

Also featured in this guide is a case study on how outsourcing giant, Unisys, was able to help Investec Bank consolidate its datacentre infrastructure by utilising technologies such as virtualisation to better manage its server farm. By standardising and simplifying its IT environment, the team was able to trim down the number of physical servers in use while giving Investec scaleable tools to meet future needs.

There’s also some advice from analysts and industry representatives on what pitfalls providers need to look out for when dealing with datacentres.

At the end of the guide we’ve listed a selection of networking and hardware products designed to deliver a more effective and energy efficient datacentre.
