Optus 3G network down again?

Telco hit by fourth outage since July

Update: Optus has advised the 3G outage that hit customers on Sydney's North Shore was rectified at 4.15PM on Friday. The company apologised for the blackout which affected 3G data services between North Sydney and St Leonards.

The Optus 3G network has suffered yet another outage, this time affecting customers across Sydney's North Shore.

Optus iPhone customers contacted Computerworld today to say they have been unable to access Optus 3G services since early this morning. Others say they have been forced to switch to 2G services.

This is the fourth outage since July for Optus. The first outage occurred in early-July when the 3G network was brought down by a council construction accident in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales; the second was caused by a failure of a Point of Presence (POP) in Stanthorpe, Queensland; and the third occurred in Brisbane in early August and was triggered by a glitch in a Nokia-issued software patch.

Reports on local telecommunications forum Whirlpool suggest the outages are localised within the North Shore area of Sydney, while some bloggers also claim service has been intermittent for the last three days.

Optus is conducting technical tests to find the cause of the problem.
