NetComm leaps into VoIP

NetComm's first VoIP offerring, an analog telephone adaptor, will spearhead a product line that distributors and resellers will see plenty of in 2005.

The V100 analog telephone adaptor (ATA), released this week, allows users to make VoIP calls with their standard telephone handset. The device plugs into a modem/router and uses a standard telephone port.

While some vendors have pinned their hopes on IP handsets for their first consumer VoIP product, NetComm hopes to snare them with the ATA device. "It's cheaper than buying a new handset," managing director, David Stewart, said.

The handset will retail for $129.

The price of the ATA could also be lower if service providers bundled the device with extras like free access, he said.

The ATA is the first of six VoIP products the vendor will launch over the next few months, according to Stewart.

"We have got two models of VoIP handsets coming, one for residential, one for business," Stewart said.

The VoIP products all have multiple Codec and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) support.

Stewart said NetComm would stage a series of information nights next month for distributors and customers that would feature the VoIP product line. "It'll also be our focus at Tech Pac's [forthcoming] ExpoTech", he said.

"We are making VoIP the main focus of our presentations there."
