Mobile broadband speed to outpace fibre, GSMA predicts

GSMA director believes 4G, 100Mbps networks will be operating in Japan and South Korea by 2010.

Mobile broadband speeds could outpace fibre in as little as two years, a GSM Association [GSMA] representative has predicted.

GSMA's director of technology, Dan Warren, has predicted that mobile broadband will reach speeds of 100 megabits per second in the next two years.

According to the GSMA, tests of the under-development 4G technology has demonstrated speeds of up to 186Mbps in the most ideal of conditions.

Based on this, the association has predicted that Japan and South Korean mobile networks will be operating at over 100Mbps by 2010, with Europe following in 2012.

Telstra's 3G Network is already capable of operating at over 14Mbps, but no devices are on sale that can take advantage of these speeds.
