Retail chain, JB Hi-Fi, is opening its first dedicated IT and computer store in Melbourne's CBD. The shopfront will be located close to its existing Elizabeth Streets premises.
JB Hi-Fi CEO, Richard Uechtritz, said the new store was in response to a lack of space, but also reflected strong growth in computer-related sales. He stressed that a computer-specific store was not a change in direction for the retailer.
"Computers are an important part of our business, and Elizabeth Street is renowned for being a technology strip," Uechtritz said.
PC sales have grown steadily since the retailer introduced computers to its product line just over 12 months ago.
Uechtritz claimed JB Hi-Fi now enjoyed double digit market share and was one of the top three computer retailers nationally.
All major computing brands, such as Acer, Toshiba, Asus and HP, are available through the retail chain, which has stores in every state and territory.
JB Hi-Fi is also planning a second store in Sydney's CBD following continued overtrading at the existing location, he said.
