Layoffs at Symantec NZ alleged

Company says 'headcount reductions' are part of cost savings initiative

Symantec is refusing to comment directly on claims in The Australian newspaper that it has "announced layoffs to its 600-strong workforce in Australia and New Zealand."

On Friday, the newspaper made the claim, saying that "according to sources, employees learned of the headcount reduction yesterday [i.e. Thursday].

A Symantec New Zealand spokesperson told Computerworld New Zealand "Symantec continues to have a strong focus on controlling its costs and has set cost savings targets for each business function.

"In some instances, headcount reductions will be implemented as part of the ongoing cost savings initiative.

"Where reductions are happening they are targeted based on the requirements of different groups to meet cost savings targets.

"The reductions will impact less than 3 percent of our worldwide employee base."

Earlier this month, Symantec Pacific Managing Director David Sykes and Asia-Pacific and Japan Channel Vice President John Donovan abruptly left the company. Sykes was replaced by Craig Scroggie, who was formerly Symantec's Asia-Pacific and Japan senior director of business development.
