Samsung scores surprise in MFD market

Charges past Canon and Fuji Xerox into third place for Q2

Samsung has made a surprise charge in the printer-based laser multifunction device (MFD) category, according to market analysts at IDC.

Pushing past market heavyweights including Canon and Fuji Xerox, the vendor secured 17.2 per cent market share in Q2.

IDC peripherals market analyst, Katarzyna Czubak, said the success of the Korean vendor could be traced to some specific colour laser products.

"We've seen a real breakthrough in the growth rate of the Samsung installed base since it released some models in the $600 range," she said. "Last year it was practically non-existent in the printer-based colour laser market; now it's number two. In the overall printer-based market, including monochrome, it's number three."

Samsung print solutions product manager, Christie Radke, said the vendor had released three colour laser products this year.

"We launched the CLX 3160FN in January, followed by the CLX 2160 and 2160N in May," she said. "The goal with these models was to reduce the size and weight of a typical colour laser device so people could have one on their desk."

The CLX 2160 is priced at $699, while the networkable 2160N variant is $749. The top five printer-based laser MFD vendors in Q2 by market share were HP (31.9 per cent), Brother (21.9), Samsung (17.2), Canon (9.6) and Fuji Xerox (8.8).
