Google launches embedded mapping service

Google Maps users can add a map to their website or blog just by copying and pasting a snippet of HTML

Google is mapping its way into blogs and web pages around the world today with the launch of its embedded Google Maps service.

The service allows users to add a fully functioning Google Map to their personal Web site or blog by copying and pasting a snippet of HTML.

All users need to do to embed a Google Map, is pull up the map (it can be a location, a business, series of driving directions, or a My Map.) Then click "link to this page", and copy and paste the HTML into the Web site or blog. Google Maps Product Manager, Jess Lee, gives details here.

The embedded map will be fully interactive so users can drag, click or zoom in on a location, and view it in map, satellite, or hybrid modes, the company claims.

Google is targetting a wide market with the free service from business owners who will be able to add a map of their business location to their website, to bloggers who will be able to write about a place or venue they have visited and embed a map of the location in the blog post itself, and other individuals who can update their personal Web sites by publishing maps of geotagged vacation photos.

The service is available in Australia, the US, the UK, Canada, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia.

Nominations for the 2012 ARN IT Industry Awards open on Tuesday, June 12.
