Nortel aiming to simplify its exam and certification program

Nortel’s is simplifying its certifications to encourage more network execs to become certified

If you were thinking of extending your vendor certifications to include Nortel and you're already a Cisco Certified Voice Professional, then you are halfway toward achieving Nortel's VoIP product certification designations.

Holders of the TIA Convergence Technologies Professional and Avaya Certified Associate (ACA) with IP Telephony focus certifications, will also be able to apply those designations toward the Nortel certifications, says the network equipment provider. The move is part of Nortel's efforts to simplify its certifications and to encourage more network execs to become certified Nortel professionals, says Scott Schauer, director of global certifications at Nortel. Another effort is to "unbundle" its certification exams and deliver them in segments, so that for instance, students can take two separate courses to achieve the same certification instead of one.

The benefit is that time away from the office to take classes and exams is reduced and that segment exams test on content covered in the course while it is still fresh in the student's mind, says Schauer.

Nortel offers three levels of certifications for Nortel enterprise and carrier products and technologies.

The entry level Nortel Certified Technology Specialist (NCTS) designation is technology focused and demonstrates that an individual has basic technical proficiency required to engineer or support a converged network. The mid-level Nortel Certified Technology Expert (NCTE) certification is aimed at individuals who can plan, design, engineer or support a converged network at an intermediate to advanced proficiency. The top-level Nortel Certified Architect (NCA) represents a highly advanced level of technical design and analytical expertise for complex Nortel environments and is targeted at those with titles such as senior networking consultant, network architect, and design engineer.

Schauer acknowledges that the bulk of the 52,541 network professionals certified by the company are Nortel distributors and resellers, but the company is keen to encourage more pros from the user community to take Nortel certification and training. For starters, Nortel is expanding its courses to include training on how to get more value out of Nortel products, he says.
