AMD and Intel sign patent agreement

Advanced Micro Devices and Intel have signed a comprehensive five-year cross-licensing agreement that gives the companies rights to each other's patents, and certain copyrights. Most im-portantly, the agreement gives AMD access to certain Intel technologies, allowing it to maintain software compatibility with the Intel instruction set during the next five years. This may pave the way for AMD to gain access to Intel's much-heralded MMX multimedia instructions that will be part of Intel's next-generation Pentium technology, scheduled to appear in the second half of this year. AMD will have no rights to Intel microcode.
