One of the channel's best kept secrets was officially revealed this week when Intel confirmed that local assembler, TodayTech is its replacement distributor for processors and motherboards.
It is believed Intel had held discussions with several potential replacements for ERA, the distributor with which it abruptly ended dealing in the first week of September. (see ARN September 2, pg 1).
A combination assembler, direct systems integrator (under its Moebius brand) and wholesaler, the TodayTech Group is expected to use the Intel appointment to clearly define its distribution business.
TodayTech was set up in 1990 by Jack Zhong and started off as a retailer before building its own systems, and has more recently become involved in component distribution. It has offices in all states, and re-establishes Intel's national 3-distributor base, joining Tech Pacific and Synnex as distributors of CPU's.
Intel's Archie Wilson told ARN last week that the IT channel would probably be more intrigued with who was NOT appointed than who WAS. Intel is believed to have made a detailed study of its latest chip partner's operations.
