Toshiba to counter mobility objections

Notebook vendor Toshiba plans to equip its resellers with the tools to counter objections from companies that do not trust employees to work remotely.

The move follows the release of a study commissioned by Toshiba and conducted by Melbourne-based Sweeny Research that found A/NZ companies were denying their employees the privilege to work remotely because they did not trust them.

The study surveyed 600 managers and employees in A/NZ and found 56 per cent of managers did not trust their employees to work away from the office.

Mistrust and rivalry between co-workers regarding flexible working is also rife, with those who work away from the office subject to criticism and corridor gossip from their colleagues.

The study found only a third of organisations currently offered flexible working in New Zealand and blamed the lack of uptake and the high levels of mistrust on an ignorance of the management practices and culture necessary for monitoring and motivating a flexible workforce. The availability of technology was not identified as an issue holding organisations back.

Toshiba A/NZ general manager, Mark Whittard, said the study showed there was an untapped potential for resellers to provide consulting services around the topic, and the company planned to provide resellers with the arguments they need.

Toshiba will form a special interest group consisting of business, management and human resource experts to draft a management guide containing practical advice on how to implement flexible working policies.

Whittard said this guide would be made available to Toshiba resellers, which would also be offered training to help counter arguments opposing the practice.
